I think the article 3 reasons why computers slow down is also a good thing to read on the topic.

I repair computers (PC's) on a daily basis. Any Symantec product's usually cause major system slowdowns, especially NIS. You should try running some tests on Norton Ghost versions 10,11, and 12. What about the Viewpoint Media Player. Some other programs that I usually uninstall from a system that is running slow are as follows:
-Symantec programs
-ViewPoint Media Player
-SpyBot
-AOL
-Yahoo Toolbar
-HP Updates
-Google Toolbar
-PC Doctor
-Any Cursor altering programs
-LimeWire
-UTorrent
-Napster
-BearShare
-Morpheus
-Kazaa
-BackWeb
-CcMon

Two programs that I really recommend using and don't slow the system down much are:
-Acronis True Image Home 11
-CCleaner

I will send some more updated lists when I have some more time.

Being older and never a Windows user until now has been an eye opener. Thank You and all the other experienced users for your input. I have had Norton Professional,Zone Alarm and McAfee. They all slow me down. I have never heard of Nod32 but would like to try..I sometimes wonder if I will ever get all this terminology straight let alone know what all these software programs do. .At least in general. I have worked with IBM,Sun Systems and general business computers. It seems they all are user friendly compared to Windows.

Nice article... The bar graph is awesome!
I had system that was slowing down, and removing the spy/adware didn't help.
Norton System Works' WinDoctor does a good job cleaning up junk after uninstallations, and in speeding up Windows. With NSW2005, it can run as a standalone.

I agree with Akoy Nakatawa Norton System Works' WinDoctor does a good job cleaning up junk after uninstallations, and in speeding up Windows. With NSW2005, it can run as a standalone. It can also be used as a standalone with NSW2002.

As far as app's slowing down my PC I am running an AMD Dual Core 5200+ with 2GB ram, the slowest thing to load on my PC is THE MOST IMPORTANT SOFTWARE my Trend Micro Anti Virus.
