My biggest XP-Pro delay is waiting for a wireless connection. It takes as long as two minutes for the connection after the desktop has displayed. The strange thing is that AVG somehow has the ability to download updates before the connection is established enough for a web browser.

BTW, VMWare player was causing the wireless connection problems. Wireless connects quickly (or perhaps stays connected) after VMWare was uninstalled.

exactly the kind of thing i have been looking for... everyone just sits at their computer and theorises on which programs are doing what without any real proof to back up their answer... finally someone actually doing an experiment to show it... and that defently has some pretty awesome and informative results keep up the good work!

Thanks for the article guys. One thing NIS2008 does is a QuickScan on bootup- I for one an Happy it does a quickie virus check.

Question was " What Slows Windows Down?"
Straight answer is: EVERYTHING!

New question: "What Slows Linux Down?"
Straight Answer is: NOTHING !!

Just my 2 cents.

Thank you so much for these tips. I had NO IDEA that fonts could slow down Windows. I just deleted all of the extra ones I had saved on my computer and I immediately saw a difference! Great great article.

Very useful info, thanks for taking the time to do that. It'll help me keep my Windows VM going fast.

Very good article!

I am amazed that Norton can have such an effect on boot times. Why pay for virus software if it only nullifies your investment in hardware? I personally use BitDefender, and it seems like that was a good choice, although the fact that it hasn't revealed any viruses over a few months of use is a bit worrisome.

Regardless, it is unbelievable that Windows can slow down so much from only a few installed programs. One more reason to use linux.

Good work. I'm just wondering, of those applications you tested, many include services or helper applications that are not necessary for the program to run. For instance, VMware workstation enables the VMNAT service, VMAuthorization service etc that can be disabled if you're not going to use them. I assume you left all defaults on.

No shockers here, aside from the time it takes to scan the whole fonts folder - which the OS could just as easily do as a post-boot background process, oh well.

It would be interesting to see the results with different "security suite" stuff. Ripping out whatever "came with the computer" and installing AVG antivirus and Sunbelt-Kerio personal firewall normally improves boot time, application speed, and network speed enough to really impress the user.

Why? The "Big Name" security vendors market on the basis of "Hey stupid you have no choice, pay us money". Vendors like Grisoft and Kerio have to compete on price and performance. No contest...
