It is so sad that this was suggested in 06 yet here I am, not 1 hour ago, cursing at some illegible string.

Similar idea to yours, but slightly different.

Imagine a row of X number of radio buttons, above any one of which may, or may not be a picture of a kitten.
The user clicks those buttons below a kitten icon, [generating a binary number] and obviously that binary number has to match the one used to generate the position of kitten icons.

So if x= 8 for example you have 256 possible combinations. I'd recommend using 48x48 icons and a 2 octal hex number, [16 radio buttons in other words.] giving you 1024 possible combinations. [and regenerating the random number for each incorrect try making brute forcing impossible]

It shouldn't be too hard for users to click along a row of buttons, distinguishing between kittens and say lizards, in fairly short order.
