This is definately NOT A SCAM. Take a look at this link here:
http://www.wfp.org/english/?ModuleID=137&Key=2695

If it was a scam, then why would it be in the official UN's World Food Programme website?

WHEN MR.JOHN BREEN LAUNCHED THIS WEBSITE WITH A NOBLE IDEA OF CONTRIBUTING SOME THING TO HUMAN CAUSE THROUGH UNITED NATIONS,WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME,HIS EFFORTS TO LAUNCH AND MAINTAIN THE SITE MAY NEED SOME FINANCIAL SUPPORT. IN CASE, HE IS REALLY NOBLE MINDED AND CONCERNED FOR HUMANITY,HE CAN DONATE THE SITE TO UN,WFP DIVISION SO THAT THE FUNDS GENERATED CAN BE FULLY UTILISED. THE ADVERTISERS AND THE VISITORS OF THE SITE ALSO HAVE A TRANPERANCY OF ACCOUNTS. HOPE JOHN BREEN WILL DISPLAY HIS MAGNANIMITY BY DONATING THE FREERICE.COM WEBSITE TO UN,WFP

In all actuality, I had to return to the site and actually look
for the banner ads. I heard about the site on NPR, and they mentioned the ads, but I didn't see them the first few times I visited. True, I wasn't looking for them, but you have to admit: they are pretty unobtrusive.

I believe that Mr. Breen (that's the name, right?) is using his funding justly and efficiently, economically speaking. If he wanted to swindle millions off of the internet, there are much easier (and less publicly-accessible) ways of doing it.

More power to you, Mr. Breen. Live long.

yours,

Aren't you going to give him start-up expenses? How long would it take to type in 10,000 words and definitions?

Now a days every one tries to make money. If some one is making money as well as doing some charity, its not bad. so, Let him make some money as well donate some. And as some one quoted I too never looked at the ads in any page so far.

I'm going to have to say that FreeRice is a good thing, if only for the fact that it poses an interesting moral dilemma to ponder. :) We should take into account, though, the benefit that folks get from spending time at FreeRice. Folks don't, after all, do it for no reason. It's a pretty fun game, for one. Also, it just makes folks feel good to think that their wasted time is being wasted in such a way that some good is coming of it. Whether that be providing folks with rice or learning a word or two. I guess this puts me in the camp of folks who don't care if Breen is making some cash off this whole deal, but mostly because I don't think folks are losing anything by spending a few moments playing a game.

There are ads on freerice? Never noticed them!

I just heard of free rice and played for 1/2 hr with huge pleasure, that pleasure being amplified by thinking of kids learning to get excited about word meanings as well as spelling. (not everyone will, of course, but it does just happen!) Having a large vocab, I contributed lots of grains of rice which also seems to be to be an unequivocal positive! The REAL cost of putting a check in the mail and sending it somewhere for $3.00? (I'm just guessing the value of my particular donation, maybe less, maybe more) would be terribly inefficient for charitable purposes, while this site plan seems enormously efficient. All good so far.

The "author" is raising the interesting and important question of John Breen's profits. he may be lying when he says that he is not keeping any of the earnings of the site (presumably no one objects to his paying a reasonable amount for the maintenance of the site etc. etc., even to himself). So, should he enter into some very expensive legal arrangements in order to make his charity more
transparent, seems to be the final question. Does anyone have ideas about how it could be more transparent and still not be another huge administrative expense? I'm not a techie, but it seems to me that ought to be possible.

I understand money is actually raised only when the player clicks on an ad. I played twice without even looking at the ads. However, when I decided to end my session at a particular point, looking around for a 'log out' or something, I noticed the banner
"e-toys ...something" and, having a couple of grandchildren, I thought I would look. I clicked and got a "no such site" message. (Safari). then I tried using Firefox and got a similar message, but at least web address that I could copy and it led to the web site for "E-toys....whatever it is.." with age categories. But Breen's site didn't get any credit, I believe, for my attempt to use the banner ad.

I have another cavil with the site of a totally different kind. Some of the definitions (at least at the 45 - 50 score level) are not the best single word possibilities. There is no feedback allowed to the "expert lexicographers" who supply the material. That would be an improvement too.

This must be too long. I've never done this before

Yea, but that article doesnt say in any way that the creator of the site is not profiting from it.

Furthermore, we all know that non-profit sites are never ".com" based.... so... maybe it should have been freerice.org ...

Finally, that concept is not unique i've found a site that donates flour and has more interestring questions called: FreeFlour.com

So i guess we'll get smarter by keep donating :)

Yes, he hands over the advertising side of things directly over to the WFP or another poverty-related charity who already have the legal framework in place to handle money transparently.

FreeFlour seems to have exactly the same issues. Not a charity, low transparency and just slightly less inefficient.
