Jackpot... the machine is being assembled smaller that 2 reams of A4 and hopefully enough grunt to make CAD work a moving experience... MORE in the coming weeks....
A quick scan of the opening page left me bored. There is an urgent need for a new thread expressing current developments.
I am no geek (too lazy to be bothered with tweaking at "text level"), but then there is no need as a gui widget covers most things (it just takes an effort, luck and time to find where it is). and when I find a windoze app that has not been ported to Linux yet (FreeShip-Plus from http://freeship-plus.pisem.su/indexEN.html ) Please if anyone can, please do port this open sourse application... else wine works in most cases. (windoze users, please be careful of the above site popups emerge from everywhere)
One cannot call Linux "free in $$$ sense" as I make contributions to help with projects of interest, and that is good...

As a programmer myself I love the idea of Ubuntu (or any Linux platform), but I agree there are a lot of fallacies out there about it. “No Viruses” I cringe when I hear this for Macs or Other Linux versions. There are viruses for it. I know because started making viruses on Linux machines. The only reason you don’t see more viruses these days is because LESS PEOPLE USE LINUX. I’m not going to make a virus for a platform that most people don’t use. Also, since less people use it, less people have enough skill to make viruses for it. This also especially true because it caters to people who want ease-of-use. It is, by no means, more secure though. I would just call it more virgin.

If you write viruses you are not a programmer. Only a complete idiot writes viruses, and only because he lacks the talent to write a real program.
Comparing Windows to Linux is like comparing a bicycle to a missile. They are not made for the same user. Windows is for the masses (basic users). Linux is for people who can actually utilized (power users). They are both necessary.

I have considered installing ubuntu, but my problem is I have clients that I do work for where I need to connect to their servers with a remote desktop which leaves me stuck with Winblows. Is it possible to run Ubunto and Winblows on one machine? If so does anyone have links to a good set of instructions?

Yeah--you can have both Ubunto and Windows on one computer. During the Ubuntu installation process, you can opt to get rid of Windows entirely or partion your hard drive. This link makes the installation a no-brainer

I Would better say, It is always good to learn things while having fun which is possible in linux. Windows is more like a package which just can be used but cannot be altered. If i have a game in Linux and if you reach all the levels and if you think that you would need a new level then i could quickly start to code myself and enjoy :-) possible right

Hi there,
Isn't it just great when people get so passionate about what they believe.
I've been trying to learn the Linux way for about 6 months now and although I still struggle with the terminal a lot, I think it's as Bennet says. So much faster. It's like the difference between having to wait on telephone line and go through automated set of directions before you get to speak to someone about your inquiry (if you are lucky) and simply getting a live intelligent person to help you straight away. I do hope I'll learn it one day.
I'm no geek , have a family and work, use Linux for watching and recording tv, helping my parents with their pcs remotely (they live overseas) of course talking on Skype , fiddle with pictures and so on. I think Linux is worth the time and effort. Most of all with it you don't feel constantly ripped of every time you click on something.I must say that I do feel safer with it. Ignorance ? Maybe. Microsoft's greed and paranoia about loss of profit is what makes me not want to use Windows at all. Plus it's getting too big and cumbersome for me.
I'm using Ubuntu now, tried Mandriva and Kubuntu first but this one is just perfect for my Pc. it seems. Everything I need is working and if not then people help me figure it out. So I also tell people how much I love it. And am no expert.
Thank you all of you wonderful clever people and programmers who make this possible .
Cheers
